Cantabrians are in for a finger-licking treat at this year’s Night Noodle Markets, returning to North Hagley Park on Waitangi Day for 12 nights. Showcasing a mouth-watering lineup of 22 eateries and family-friendly entertainment, the fully-licensed pop-up food festival also leads the way in being kind to the environment.

Stuff Events & Sponsorship Director David Blackwell says, “We hand-pick all our stallholders to ensure there’s an array of traditional and modern Asian flavours, options for people with dietary requirements, as well as a mix of stallholders from the Canterbury region, around New Zealand, and further abroad.”

Popular local eatery and 2018’s crowd-favourite, Sister Kong, is returning with a new menu as ‘Bang Bang Street Eats’; ever-popular Hoy Pinoy is back and serving up tasty new items; Little Kyoto is debuting in Christchurch all the way from Japan; and a wealth of Canterbury favourites are coming to the party, including newcomer Mumbaiwala.

This year’s Night Noodle Markets coincides with the Chinese New Year, giving Christchurch locals an authentic way to celebrate with traditional entertainment and the hustle and bustle of an Asian street-style food market. What’s more, the event will run alongside UB40’s 40th anniversary gig on Waitangi Day and Christchurch’s Sparks festival on Saturday 16 February (both also held at North Hagley Park) – making it the perfect stop for a pre-concert feast.

While food festivals are not usually thought of as environmentally-friendly, the Night Noodle Markets is defying the odds, having recently been nominated for Best Sustainable Event at the 2018 NZEA Event Awards.

“We’ve been making real headway in this space since the first Night Noodle Markets launched in Christchurch in 2016, and this year we’re working even more closely with the Christchurch City Council to minimise the effect of events on the environment.”

At the recent Auckland Night Noodle Markets, a massive 95% of all event waste was diverted from landfill, being composted, recycled or re-used.

“Our stallholders must use approved compostable packaging, drinks are served in recyclable cans, and all event waste is hand-sorted into the correct waste stream,” says Mr Blackwell.

A first this year, free event Wi-Fi and a new mobile event guide are set to make sharing the Night Noodle Markets experience easy without worrying about chewing up data.

Entry is free and food options range from $5 to $20. All ages are welcome, as well as furry friends are on a leash. The event is completely cashless – all stallholders accept major credit and debit cards (excluding AMEX), and have contactless, Apple Pay and Google Pay facilities.
