A bold and sophisticated kitchen took out the title of Supreme Winner at the annual NZ House & Garden Interior of the Year 2019 awards, held at a gala event in Auckland tonight.

The country’s leading home interiors title, Stuff’s NZ House & Garden magazine, hosts the annual event in search of the country’s most beautiful single room, with six different categories.

These prestigious awards can be entered by homeowners, interior designers or architects and the awards this year saw entries that included a psychedelic-styled round brick room, a glass-boxed bedroom, an exuberant floral powder room, a stepped corten steel entry and an elegant living room.

The winning kitchen features a wall of soft-green tiles, timber cabinetry and an intricately designed island, and was created by Lorraine O’Rourke of Trinity Interior Design.

The judges said: “The green tile and the integration of the rangehood are sensational. The island is beautifully designed with its daring selection of materials. The kitchen is fresh and on-trend, bold and adventurous. It shows commitment to great design.”

Along with the Supreme Winner, there were 18 other finalists and six category winners for living room, bedroom, kitchen, outdoor living, bathroom and out of the ordinary.

This year’s event was extra exciting, coinciding with the appointment of the magazine’s new editor, Naomi Larkin: “We’ve seen the return of traditional elements mixed in a modern way and people who aren’t afraid of expressing their personality in these spaces. This comes through not only with the designers but also with homeowners.”

This year’s award attracted many entries from the design community as well as some highly creative homeowners. Each of the category winners received cash prizes as well as a specially commissioned trophy made by Wanganui glass artist Dominic Burrell. The Supreme Winner also received an $8000 getaway to Matakauri Lodge, Queenstown.

The judges this year included former NZ House & Garden editor Sally Duggan, associate editor Sharon Newey, art director Richard Brunton, architects Kate Rogan and Eva Nash, interiors photographer Jane Ussher and stylist Sarah Lods.
