What is The Paper Planes competition all about?
The Paper Planes competition is an opportunity for you and your team to demonstrate how innovative you can get with print-led advertising concepts that can be brought to life in an integrated manner, delivering effective and impactful results.
What is the prize?
The Winners (the Companies featured in or subject of the Winning Entries) will be awarded a share of $500,000 (including GST) worth of advertising across Stuff’s print (excluding magazines) and digital advertising products, valued at rate card (subject to availability) so they can bring their concept to life or extend their campaign if their advertisements have gone to print during the course of the competition (from 1 March 2021 to 19 April 2021).
The Prize must be booked and fully redeemed by 20 May 2022.
Prizes will be awarded as follows:*
1. Best print campaign – $300k print advertising
2. Best integrated campaign – $100k print and digital advertising (This will include $60,000 print advertising and $40,000 digital advertising)
3. Best digital campaign – $100k digital advertising
The prizes are non-transferable and are additional to any existing advertising commitments the Winners may have with Stuff and is subject to the Stuff Limited General Terms and Conditions for advertisers.
And of course, the winning teams will also enjoy industry bragging rights that ad guru and global authority on trust in advertising, Cindy Gallop, rated their work as the best!

Who can enter?
Entry is restricted to New Zealand media and advertising agencies, and local and national brands.
How do I enter?
Entries open 9:00am 1 March 2021 – visit the enter now page.
What should I include in my entry?
Treat your entry like a creative pitch to a client. Make it visual so that we can see how your creative idea will work in a printed newspaper environment and how it can be integrated into digital advertising.
In your entry submission, frame up the business challenge, explain your solution, tell us why you believe print is the most powerful medium for this execution, how it can be integrated into a digital campaign and why you believe it will make a difference to the featured brand’s business.
What can I enter?
All entries must:
● be original
● meet the Advertising Standard Authority Guidelines
● not include anything that is misleading or deceptive or likely to mislead or deceive or which otherwise breaches the Fair Trading Act 1986, and not infringe the rights of any third party.
Your entry must be a print-led advertising concept that can be integrated to a digital campaign, if relevant.
Can I enter an advertisement that has already been published?
Yes. As well as unpublished creative, entries may also include advertisements that have gone to print during the course of the competition (from 1 March 2021 to 19 April 2021).
Can I enter on behalf of my client?
Yes, however a senior executive from your client, client brand or company must provide permission to enter the Paper Planes Competition. Permission must include an agreement for the winning advertisements to be published in Stuff Publications, online and in marketing materials. We may request proof of this permission directly from the client, brand or Company. You must include the client, brand or Company contact details in the entry.
What is the judging process?
Entries will be judged in two phases:
● Phase one:
All entries will be first judged by a Stuff leadership panel, who represent a spread of skills, disciplines and backgrounds including editorial, creative, marketing and commercial.
The panel will then shortlist the top ten best entries.
● Phase two:
From the shortlist, Cindy Gallop will choose the winning entries – which she will announce at The Paper Planes Award Breakfast in May 2021.
What are the judging criteria?
● Innovation: 50%
● Strategic insight: 20%
● Contribution to the reader experience: 20%
● Art direction: 10%
While we want you to let your imagination take flight, here are some criteria that the entries must fit within:
● Ideas must be able to run legally in accordance with all relevant laws and regulations.
● Entries must be print-led advertising concepts that can be brought to life in an integrated manner.
● Reader experience is paramount, so no interruption or covering of genuine editorial content.
● Production must be possible on conventional newspaper printing equipment.
Is there an entry fee?
No, entry is free.
Can I submit more than one entry?
Yes. Agencies can enter on behalf of numerous clients. Companies may submit more than one entry. One person must be nominated as the contact.
How do I submit creative artwork files?
Upload either a high resolution .jpeg or high-quality print .pdf file of your entry’s visual creative using your preferred file transfer programme (e.g. WeTransfer or Dropbox). Please include this link within the entry form so that we can download and view your creative genius.
What is the entry period?
Entries may be submitted online at www.paperplanes.stuff.co.nz any time from 9:00am, 1 March 2021 until 11:59pm, 19 April 2021. Once submitted, entries cannot be edited or changed.
