Democracy AI tool delivers hyper-local content for Stuff Group

A custom AI system has been developed to scan public documents including council minutes, government reports, and submissions. It uses GPT technology with journalist verification at every step.

Created by Joanna Norris, the tool was trialled at the Waikato Times covering 11 local authorities. Editor MacKenzie says it frees reporters from desk work to focus on the stories that matter.

A "Ratepayers' Roundup" column in The Waikato Local features stories surfaced by the tool. After a two-month pilot, the system is being expanded to other Stuff newsrooms.
